Bringing Stories to Life

Beckon Creative was established to publish the work of Canadian illustrator and author Andy Smart. What began as a place for his books and illustrations has grown into a creative home for stories, ideas, and projects inspired by a lifelong love of art, imagination, and learning.

At the heart of Beckon Creative is the belief that a good story should invite you in. Children’s books should be fun to explore, illustrations should spark curiosity, and learning should feel like an adventure. From the first sketch to the finished page, each project is created with that spirit in mind, combining playful artwork with thoughtful storytelling. Free activities and resources also help extend the experience beyond the book and encourage readers to keep exploring.

Andy’s work is deeply connected to his experience of Canada. Having lived from one end of the country to the other, he has developed a lasting appreciation for its vast landscapes, interesting places, and, most of all, its people. There is still plenty of Canada left to discover, and that sense of curiosity and adventure continues to find its way into his creative work.

Beckon Creative is still growing, with new ideas and projects quietly taking shape behind the scenes. Some are ready to share, while others need a little more time.

Beckon Creative

Book Edition indicators.

Beckon Creative books are published using a unique Ribbon Edition system that lets readers follow the evolution of a book over time. When a book is first published, it begins as the Green Ribbon Edition—the original version, before any later edits, corrections, design changes, or new covers are introduced. As updates are made, the book moves through the Yellow, Red, Blue, and finally Purple Ribbon Editions, with each colour marking another stage in the book’s development. Because Beckon Creative books are printed on demand, the earlier you purchase a newly released book, the more likely you are to receive a Green Ribbon Edition. Once a new version is uploaded, the previous edition is retired and is no longer available for new purchases, making earlier editions increasingly special to the readers who already own them.

Alongside the Ribbon Editions are two special categories: Special Version Silver and Special Version Gold. These editions are created outside the normal publishing process and are not available through Beckon Creative’s regular online sales channels. They may include specially hand-drawn, hand-painted, signed, uniquely constructed, or otherwise personally crafted copies created by Andy Smart. These special versions are intended to be rarer and more collectible, and may be offered directly, in person, or through limited special releases. Whether it’s a first-edition Green Ribbon book or a one-of-a-kind Gold edition, each version becomes part of the creative history of the book—and a little piece of Beckon Creative history for the reader who owns it.
